To be fair, there are a couple of features that the NewtNews has, that I wish
were in Trumpet (NewtNews was my first Winsock-based newsreader, until I found
out about Trumpet from a co-worker). I miss the ability to tag a particular
article as unread, and have that article remain that way until I get around to
re-reading and/or replying to it (for those cases where I find an article that
I'd like to reply to, but I don't have the time at that instant). It also
seems to me that NewtNews allows one to re-order newsgroups, which I'm pretty
sure that Trumpet doesn't.
Also, I should say that in the past I've been a regular user of rn and nn on
UN*X systems (via modem dial-up in VT100 emulation), and although the user
interface under Windows (and the high speed of a live Internet connection)
makes programs like Trumpet a joy to use, I too miss the kill files & other
features that made it possible to participate on a larger number of
newsgroups, without having to resort to pressing the "skip all" button
repeatedly after I'd spent all the time I can afford on a particular day, or
worse yet, having to unsubscribe from newsgroups that occasionally contain
either pearls of wisdom that I can make use of, or maybe even questions from
others that *I* can answer, cortesy of the pearls I've gathered so far.

I picked up "Writing Windows Device Drivers", by David Thielen and Brian
Woodruff ($39.95 cover price,ISBN 0-201-62706-X) a couple of weeks ago.
It's really terse, and difficult to read unless you already kind of know
what they are trying to explain, but it's the best thing I've seen so
far. The major portion of the book is a reference for many of the VxD
function calls documented in the DDK, and the API's for the system VxD's.
